About the Veterinary Clinic
Dr. Bert Coco was born and raised in Moreauville, a rural town in central Louisiana. Raised on a farm, he decided to become a veterinarian when he was a senior in high school. He studied animal science while attending Louisiana State University (LSU) in Alexandria for two years and then LSU-Baton Rouge where he was an undergraduate researcher in the reproductive physiology lab. He gained admission into the newly established School of Veterinary Medicine at LSU as part of the third official class of students. During his fourth year of veterinary school, he married his classmate Dr. Sally Coco. Dr. Bert graduated in 1979 and became licensed to practice veterinary medicine in Louisiana and Texas. Before graduation, he and his wife and best friend dreamed of opening their own practice. After months of renovations, planning, and design, Westside Veterinary Clinic opened its doors in DeRidder in the summer of 1979. He is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association. Since moving to DeRidder thirty-five years ago, Dr. Bert has been very involved in the local community through serving as a volunteer fireman and on the board of his local fire district, supporting Dixie Youth Softball, and mentoring numerous students studying to become veterinary technicians. He is also an active member of First Baptist Church where he has served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher.
Dr. Bert has several areas of special interest including internal medicine and dermatology. He especially enjoys taking the time to talk to get to personally know his clients and their families. He and his partner, Dr. Sally, have two daughters, Lindsay, who is married to Justin, and Stephanie, who is married to Joey. Additionally, they have been blessed with two grandsons, and a granddaughter! They also have three pets—a mischievous terrier mix named Lizzy, who they adopted from the DeRidder City Pound in 2011, and two cats named Ifrus and Tallulah who were abandoned as kittens on the front porch of the clinic in 2008.
