The exact origin of this dog is unknown, many have opinions Saluki has got its name from the city Saluk, which is situated in the south of the Arabian Desert. It was acknowledged as the breed by English Kennel Club in 1922.

The dog has a graceful and proud appearance. Slim body looks well on mid-high legs. Dogs have 65-70 cm. of height at the withers, lady-dogs are smaller. A head has a narrow long shape.

Saluki's hair is long, soft and requires daily brushing. Color is mostly ivory, white and golden-red, and black-and-tan. The tail is set low, long and the movements are easy.

Despite the fact Saluki is a passionate hunter, it is known as a lapdog in Europe, most people buy this dog to highlight their status.
